Accident & Emergency - A&E / ER
Accident & Emergency (A&E or ER) departments treat serious injuries that your own GP cannot treat, for example a broken leg. In Denmark, you cannot just go to the A&E / ER but have to call your own doctor or Lægevagten before going to the A&E/ ER.
In case of an accident or another emergency situation, call 112.
Lægevagten - Emergency Doctor Service
Ordinary doctor’s surgeries are open from 8.00 to 16.00 Monday to Friday. If you need to talk to or see a doctor after 16.00 on weekdays, at weekends and during public holidays, you must contact Lægevagten (Emergency Doctor Service).
The telephone number of Lægevagten in the Central Denmark Region is +45 70 11 31 11.
Here you will talk to an after-hours doctor on duty who, based on your symptoms, will decide whether you need to be seen by a doctor or go to hospital.
When calling Lægevagten, you need to have the information on your health insurance card at hand.
It is not possible to show up at A&E (Accident & Emergency) / ER (emergency room) without being referred from Lægevagten.
Emergency numbers
Accident, fire or a serious crime
Call 112 if lives, property or the environment are in acute danger, if there is a need for immediate police assistance, an ambulance, the fire brigade or environmental action. Do NOT call 112 if the situation is not acute but call 114 (the police) instead.
The emergency call centre will ask you what has happened (where and when), the number you are calling from and how many are injured. Based on the information you provide, the call centre will determine what kind of assistance is needed.
General police assistance
Call 114 for general police assistance, e.g., report a crime or information/guidance on permissions issued by the police.
Sirene warnings
Sirens in Denmark are used to warn people in case of major emergencies where people need to stay indoors, for example to avoid being disposed to chemical gasses or hazardous smoke.
Every year on the first Wednesday in May at 12.00, the public sirens and the siren alert on mobiles are tested with sound.
If the sirens sound at any other times, go indoors, turn on the radio or tv to find out what you need to do. You will also receive a siren alert on your mobile phone with instruction.
