Formalities

When you decide that you wish to move to Denmark, you need to familiarise yourself with the rules for obtaining residency. The rules differ depending on where you come from and your reason for staying in Denmark. Settle in Denmark (borger.dk) gives an overview of the rules that apply depending on whether you are a Nordic citizen, an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen or a non-EU/EEA citizen.

To find information about the application process for you (and your family), consult the official portal for foreign nationals wishing to visit, live or work in Denmark, New to Denmark.

The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration – also called SIRI – is responsible for the handling and issuing of residence permits and EU residence documents in Denmark. You can find their contact details on New to Denmark (nyidanmark.dk).

In order to get your EU residence document, you need to go to SIRI’s office at the International Citizen Service in Aarhus (or one of the other SIRI offices in Denmark) as Viborg Municipality cannot issue this.

When you are granted residence, you will receive a residence card by post as proof of your right to reside in Denmark.

To live in Denmark, you need to register with your municipality of residence and have a CPR number (civil registration number) issued. The CPR number is essential when you are in contact with Danish authorities, e.g., the municipality, SKAT (the tax authorities) and health services as well as your bank, insurance company or other service providers.

To register with Viborg Municipality, you need to book an appointment with Citizen Service (Borgerservice) and show up in person on the day and time of the appointment. To book an appointment, contact Borgerservice on +45 87 87 87 47.

You need to bring a completed entry form and a number of documents to the appointment. You can find the form and the list of required documents on Are you moving to Denmark at viborg.dk.

If you have questions relating CPR registration, please contact Viborg Municipality’s Team Folkeregister on +45 87 87 87 20.

It is also possible to register with your municipality of residence at the International Citizen Service West (ICS West) in Aarhus. For more information see ICS West in Aarhus.

When you register with the municipality to get your CPR number, the municipality will order a Danish health insurance card (the yellow card) for you. At the same time, you will be assigned a general practitioner (GP) / family doctor.

When working in Denmark, you will need a digital tax card (skattekort). The tax card shows how many percent of your income you have to pay in tax. Your actual tax rate will depend on how much you earn and how many deductions you are entitled to.

Information about the tax card is available on Get a tax card as a non-Danish employee and on The Danish tax cards. Your guide to working in Denmark will give you an overview of how to ensure that you pay the right tax and are given the right tax deductions.

Information about the Danish tax system is available on A general introduction to the Danish tax system and on Individuals at skat.dk. You can find a video about the Danish Tax System on YouTube.

You apply for a tax card and Danish personal tax number on the Danish Tax Authority’s website. When applying, you will be asked to attach a number of documents. A list of those is available on the application page.

For tax related questions, you should contact SKAT.

If you have a foreign driving license and have normal residence in Denmark and wish to drive in Denmark, you need to ensure that your driving license is valid. To find out which rules apply to you, you can find information on Viborg Municipality’s website on Driving license. You are also welcome to contact Team Kørekort (driving license) in Borgerservice (Citizen Service) on +45 87 87 87 10.
