Municipal responsibilities and City Council
In Denmark, the public sector is highly decentralised which means that what can be dealt with at local is being dealt with at local level. The 98 municipalities are responsible for delivering welfare and developing local communities within their respective municipal borders. The municipalities’ responsibilities are very varied and range from care for elderly and disabled to waste management and collection, and from operating primary and lower secondary schools to issuing building permits. For more information about the municipalities’ responsibilities and the structure of the Danish public sector see Municipal Responsibilities and Structure of the Danish public sector.
