Elections

Whether you are entitled to vote in a Danish election depends on the type of election and your citizenship.

If you are entitled to vote in an election, you will prior to the election receive a poll card telling you when to vote and at which polling station. You must bring your poll card with you to the polling station.

Parliament (Folketing) elections (general elections)

Folketing elections have to be held with no more than four years apart, but the timing of the actual elections is determined by the Prime Minister who can call an election before the end of the four period.

To vote in a Folketing election, you must be 18 years old, be a Danish citizen and reside permanently in Denmark.

Municipal and regional elections (local elections)

Municipal and regional elections are held in November every fourth year.

To vote in a municipal and regional election, you must be 18 years old, be a Danish citizen or a citizen of another EU country or a citizen of Iceland or Norway and reside permanently in the municipality to vote in the municipal election and in the region for the regional election.

Citizens of other countries can vote in municipal and regional elections when they have been permanently residing in Denmark for a period of four years.

European Parliament elections

European Parliament elections are held every fifth year.

To vote in a European Parliament election, you must be 18 years old, and either be a Danish citizen legally residing in Denmark or another EU country or be a citizen of another EU country legally residing in Denmark.

Referendum

You are entitled to vote in a referendum if you are entitled to vote in a Folketing election.
